Birthday Bash

Due to the unforeseen closure of the Old Moor Tavern it has been necessary to change the venue of the annual Birthday Bash to The George and Dragon in Mexborough. The evening will still be on Saturday 26th April 2008 with a 7.00 for 7.30pm start.

Fire Festival Farewell

The 2007 Fire Festival came to a successful [if cold and icy] end late on Sunday night. The team were able to say Thank You to the vicar Tim Leach who joined us in the Sandygate for most of the evening. This will be his last Fire Festival as vicar since he is planning his retirement during the coming months. The team want to wish him well in the future and register their appreciation of his support whilst he has been vicar at Wath Parish Church. Hopefully his successor will be equally supportive and we will be able to continue the festival in similar vain in the future.

The first dance out of 2008

January 23rd sees the first dance out of 2008 when Wath travel to join White Rose Morris Men at Huddersfield Railway Station at approx 8.30 pm. This is now a regular event in the team’s calendar when a good night is guaranteed in front of a real live fire like we all remember.

Charity Donations

The two mumming tours, in Wentworth and Wath, raised a total of £355.00 from the collections. This money is to be divided equally between Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice and Swinton Lock Centre. Cheques will be officially presented to representatives of each organization as part of the Boxing Day tour.
Thanks to all the hosts who provided the venues and the audiences without which the evenings could not have taken place.

Fire Festival with little ‘fire’

Wath Morris have organized a ‘Fire festival’ on the Sunday before Christmas for some 10 years. This year is no exception but with growing concerns and problems around promoting fireworks and flares there will be no firework display.
The team will take part in the Carol Concert in the Parish Church at 6.30 pm and there will be dancing outside the church afterwards. A procession into Wath town centre with more dancing in the square will be followed by a traditional music and carol session in The Sandygate Hotel from around 9.00pm where the team will also present the traditional ‘St George’ mummers play.
We hope to see a good number of you on the night - all in good voice !!!!

32 Years and going Strong

2007 sees the 32nd consecutive Boxing Day tour by the Morris Team and some of this year’s dancers were involved in the first tour in 1976. Over all those years the team has always danced in Wentworth. Originally the dancing followed after the Hunt had left the Rockingham Arms but nowadays the Hunt is not the regular Boxing Day event it was.
This year the tour begins in Wath town centre at 10.30 am before moving to the Post Office in Wentworth to dance at 11.00 am. Then it’s to the Rockingham Arms for traditional and seasonal songs before dancing down to the George and Dragon for a further dance spot around 1.30 pm. The team then return to Wath for a Music and Dance spot at the Telstar pub at around 2.30 pm and finally the Sandygate Hotel around 4.30 pm. The Sandygate hosts a variety of events, some involving audience participation, and this is also the venue for the annual Bucket Singing competition.
Why not come along and join us - for the whole day or just a part of it - and exercise some of those Christmas Day excesses away.?

St George fights for Bluebell Wood

Last year the team took the St George mummers play to Wentworth on a trial tour of private houses much as would have been done in years gone by. Despite some really terrible weather the tour was a great success and as a result it is being repeated this year - in Wath on Tuesday 11th and in Wentworth on Friday 14th December.
Money collected on the tours will be distributed equally between the Bluebell Wood Trust and Swinton Lock Adventure Centre.

Woodman Third Time Lucky

Wath hope to be dancing at the Woodman Pub in Swinton this Tuesday {19th June}. Rather like the marriage banns this is for the third time of asking and hopefully it will be as successful as the last appearance when everyone had a great evening.

A Monday Dance-Out

In order to share a dance-out with the Boggart’s Breakfast dance team Wath are changing their normal pattern to dance at Hemmingfield on Monday 25th June. This will be the first time the teams have shared a dance-out and we are looking forward to an enjoyable evening at The Elephant and Castle.

Hartley at Last

Wath met Hartley Morris more than twenty years ago and have always intended to visit them at their week-end of Dance. Eventually it has happened. Wath had a thoroughly enjoyable experience at Wrotham last weekend when the highlight was a magical and moving Morrismen impromptu singing concert in the courtyard of Ightham Mote on the Sunday morning. Thanks to all who were involved in the organization and delivery of the weekend and hopefully it won’t be another twenty years before we take part again.
